Few segments in the food industry can be so easily damaged by improper storage or packaging conditions as spices. In almost all types of packaging the primary protective function is combined with sales-promotion function. The shelf life of spices is greatly affected by packing, storage and distribution processes in conjunction with a strict adherence to hygiene standards. The range of packaging materials is really
wide – from flexible to rigid ones. On store shelves and counters, pouches of all kinds (flat, shaped, doypacks, etc.), spice boxes made of glass or plastic, metal, plastic or glass jars as well as spiral-wound paperboard containers, mostly in the form of composite cans, can be found. In addition to typical consumer packaging, spices are packed in bulk, transport, group or gift packaging.
