Today, the importance of this eco-friendly and fully recyclable material is growing in relation to sustainability, too. Transport packages made by THIMM SCHERLTER Packaging Systems in Chotětov are especially suitable for the automotive, solar or furniture industries, electronics as well as medical device, measuring instrument, control system, lamp and lighting manufacturers. Each one is specific and the company takes these specifications into account when making choice of packaging materials. Apart from corrugated board, wood, films, and various foam materials are also being used.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Versatile packaging for diverse components
page 16
The VMT Ecopack, s. r. o., company has developed a transport package for door panels for an important automotive component supplier. The task was to design a versatile packaging for both front and rear door panels and concurrently for both three- and five-door models. At the same time, the necessity of preserving the quality of transported parts, as well as the need of placing a varying number of parts into one transport unit were emphasized.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Interest in export packaging increases, its price decreases
page 18
První obalová společnost, a part of the international Pregis group, specialises chiefly in industry packaging. They focus on challenging jobs, incl. export to overseas, into difficult climatic conditions. The goods is protected against harsh handling, impacts, vibrations, static and dynamic compression, puncture or surface damage, moisture, and temperature extremes. Questions on the issue were answered by Jiří Zukal, the transport packaging supervisor of the Prague branch.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>How desiccants work
page 20
In order for the moisture to not degrade sensitive products during transportation, it is necessary to create an optimal microclimate inside the pack. Desiccants help to lower the moisture below the critical level. However, their sorption capacity is limited and once past the saturation point they stop to work. Their efficiency increases only if the sorption process is concentrated in a closed pack. Flexible and impermeable materials are used, for example PE films with the lowest possible water vapor permeation (about 100 microns and above) or three- or four-ply aluminium barrier (sandwich) films. The required number of desiccant units is calculated in accordance to DIN 55474 based on various criteria such as the country of destination, water vapor tightness, transport duration and storage among others. Generally, inert porous materials are used as the absorbents.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Twilight of pallet tubing in EOL packaging?
page 22
The end of line packaging marks the end of manufacturing process and the beginning of the product’s journey to the customer at the same time. Unless it is the line releasing the goods for direct distribution, the last stage provides transport packaging. Usually, this means securing load on pallets. One of the most traditional methods is heat-shrink pallet tubing or bags. This year’s Interpack recorded almost zero presence of pallet tubing materials, machinery, and equipment and more or less standard offering of stretch films and wrapping machines. The stretch hood machines and new stretch hood film solutions prevailed.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Transport in a foam nest
page 24
Expanded PS is a material capable of protecting products like fish, meat, vegetables, and fruits during transportation despite of its minimum weight and keeping them fresh thanks to excellent insulation properties and non-absorption. It is also able to keep higher temperatures, for instance in coffee, tea or pizza delivery. Transport of sensitive drugs and blood bags in required stable temperatures can be guaranteed with a help of EPS containers. Highly sensitive electronic devices, TV screens, white electronics, computers, glass, etc. can be protected from impacts during transportation by the means of EPS packs.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>IBCs – new packaging generation
page 26
IBCs distinguish themselves with the resistance to a vast majority of aggressive chemicals as well as a good stackability. A more economic use of the pallet’s footprint (more than a third) compared to the drums is their advantage. They are utilized above all by chemical, pharmaceutical, and food product manufacturers due to their reliability and safety. Refurbished and cleaned containers can be exploited further. Structural elements made of various materials are easy to dismantle and fully recyclable. Schütz, the leader in the IBC segment, introduced containers equipped with a highly resistant PE pallet and covered with an EVOH barrier layer at Interpac

It is therefore necessary that oversize load transport is provided by well trained and experienced workers with years of experience.Tens of companies involved in oversize load transport operate in the Czech Republic. However, the six founding members of the Heavy and Oversize Load Carriers Association range at the top: ABP – Plzeň, Dan – Czech Specialtransport, NOSRETI, Rádl, TRANSPORT LOGISTIC and UTP – Universal Transport Praha.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Good maintenance saves costs
page 35
Handling equipment accounts for a significant item in the warehouse manager’s costs. Underestimation of daily maintenance and improper use of trucks generally reduce their technical quality, reliability and service life quickly. For this reason, the handling equipment operators should follow instructions for routine truck maintenance. Regular maintenance should begin by an everyday morning inspection performed by individual truck operators.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Suppliers – packaging and filling lines

Filling and packaging at Interpack 2011
page 38
At this year’s Interpack trade fair held in Düsseldorf, Germany in May, the visitors often had the opportunity to watch technology innovations live. The vast majority of demonstrations was related to packaging and foodstuff handling above all.
OYSTAR Benhil came up with the new Multipack 3000 intended for highly hygienic packaging of pasty products. This flexible single-cell filling and wrapping machine thanks to its modular design can be set up and reequipped in just a short amount of time.
Developing pneumatic components, Rexroth concentrated on hygienic aspects, too. Specially designed for use in the food and packaging industry, pneumatic components enable hygienic handling of food products and efficient packaging of all types of workpieces. Grippers, cylinders or valve terminal systems are perfectly matched and can be combined according to the special requirements of food processing as well as primary, secondary, or end packaging needs.
Chronos BTH exhibited one of the open-mouth bagging systems OML-1030 BF sold to Weston Milling, one of the largest cereal processors in New Zealand and Australia. Joint collaboration has also seen the evolution of a highly innovative BlockTop™ bag closing technique for flour and other food related industries.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Technology

Gallus EM 410
page 42
A new type of Gallus EM 410 S flexographic printing press was put into operation at Obchodní tiskárny Kolín in a mid-June. This unique type of nine-color flexographic printing press is currently the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. The firm considers the production technology as the opportunity to cover the pharmaceutical segment enabling it to print labels including Braille. The Heidelberg company took charge of machinery installation. Beside standard flexography, Gallus EM 410 S encompasses also screen printing, hot-foil stamping, die cutting, perforation and embossing units, and is equipped for layer lamination/delamination and printing on adhesive. An option allows changes in the future, too.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Labeling

GTIN allocation rules
page 44
The proper GTIN allocation is unclear for some users. Uncertainty also prevails when a new code is being allocated to different product variants according to the target market – a new language version or multilanguage packaging for various markets for example. It is also necessary to keep an eye on the code allocation in cases of significant changes of the packaging, inclusion of a certification mark or bonus packs.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Focused on materials – metals

When you say: a tin…
page 47
Compared to other materials, metals stand out due to their nearly 100% barrier properties. For this reason, we see metals applied in both consumer and transport packaging. In some cases, metal containers are firmly connected to the product processing technology. This applies to tins above all. A corresponding filling method follows after the material converting during fabrication.

<span style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold“>Art of Can
page 50
In terms of marketing theory and even praxis, the product packaging not only sells but also promotes manufacturer’s brand. The Red Bull company goes further in this strategy. It acquaints the customer with the product’s container even after the contents were consumed, doing this in a very unusual and creative manner. The activities included a recent workshop Red Bull Art of Can in the Czechdesign’s gallery premises in Prague. On the project’s history, its intentions and exceptional waste recyclation, we talked with Stanislav Baláž, junior brand manager Red Bull Czech Republic and Slovakia, and a young product designer Jan Plecháč.

<img deltis=“img“ deltis_type=“normal“ alt=““
